Help your child love to read!

Need some down time during school vacation (or any) week? Read to your kids! One of my favorite mornings starts with my daughter crawling into bed with me, asking me to read a book! I've been reading to my kids ever since I can remember - when I packed my "hospital bag" oh so many years ago I couldn't decide which book I wanted to read to my newborn first - so I packed three! Two of my all time favorites are The Aminal and I Don't Care. Try books that rhyme for babies and young toddlers. Two of my favorites are My Big Book of Fairy Tales in Rhyme and Find the Real Mother Goose.

Once your children are walking about, let them pick books that look interesting to them. Have a little truckster? Fill up on books about cars and trucks - try Dad's Car Wash substituting your child's name for John's or You Can Name 100 Trucks - look for the yellow van on every page. At one point I actually could name 100 trucks I read so many car books! Princess in waiting residing at your house? Pull out the fairy tales and decide what you actually read-aloud - some are scary so edit your version to provide a little small thrill. Our favorite fairy tale book was one my dad read to me when I was little - maybe my grandfather read it to him when he was little - the copyright is 1921. No matter how old your child is make some time, get comfy and read aloud to them - I hope you'll find the experience fun and relaxing!

  1. i love how this is hands on for children to choose a book...that way the love of reading and interests in other areas of life is open to them!
